Sporting Goods retailers up 11% – other verticals down
Australian retail sales had just one star performer in September with all other retail verticals taking a dive. Sporting goods retailers were up by 11% in September in terms of growth on the same period last year, far surpassing any other sector who were all negative performers vs last year.
The sporting sector includes any sports type store including sports wear, bikes, fishing, skate, surf and snow to name a few. Many of the major Eastern cities suffered from severe weather in the last month which may have contributed to dropping sales when compared with the same period last year.
Furniture sales down two consecutive months
Furniture was down for the second month in a row and saw a 6.4% drop together with the General sector (including discount/variety, pet stores, travel and hobbies) following close behind with a 3.2% drop compared with the same period last year.
All sectors show improvement in September vs August this year
Despite the drop in sales when comparing September for the same period last year, the month on month growth (September vs August 2016) showed positive sales growth for most retail verticals – with overall sales up by 2.2%
Furniture was down marginally on August but Fashion, Sporting and the General Sectors all increased sales in September compared with August by up to almost 4%.
