This week’s sales data has shown signs of positive improvement across all sectors, but conditions still remain somewhat volatile in the weeks since the Federal Budget was released. Retail sales improved overall by 5.65%, with Furniture & Homewares the stand out performer with an increase of over 9%. It remains to be seen if this positive trend will continue into subsequent weeks, or whether consumers will buy into the post-budget doom and gloom. Visit the Australian Retail Index for the week’s full results. Myer is one retailer who has decided to postpone their usual sale until 18 June (rather than launching this as they normally would in early June) while presumably waiting for a more favourable consumer sentiment to surface. It is worth noting that retail sales are still in a better position now than they were at the same time last year.
